Low-carbon industry generated over £46bn in 2014: ONS

New data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that the low carbon and renewable energy (LCRE) economy generated £46.2bn in turnover during 2014, while employing 238,500 full-time equivalent workers. The majority of businesses operating in the LCRE economy were in the construction industry—accounting for £12.4bn of the total LCRE turnover. LCRE activity related to renewable energy generated £15.9bn and employed 43,500 full time equivalent staff in 2014. Energy efficient products represented the highest individual contributor to the recorded turnover (£21.9bn) and made up nearly two thirds (155,500) of the employees.
