First electric vessels to be launched by new consortium

A new consortium is planning to launch a pair of electric vessels. The tankers will be powered by lithium-ion batteries and will reduce crew workload through automatic and digital functions.

These plans come from the ‘e5 Consortium’ which is comprised of seven companies. The consortium’s name is derived from their five core principles; electrification, environment, evolution, efficiency and economics. The project has been formed to aid Japan in improving their greenhouse gas emissions.

It is hoped the project will be completed by early 2022 and when finished, the vessels will be the world’s first zero emission electric tankers.
