Key Highlights from TEC Conference 2024

The day had a celebratory feel to it, helping mark TEC’s 30th anniversary. Six workshops, led by TEC Framework partners, TEC members and independent experts, explored key energy themes and topics affecting the higher education sector.  

These included: 

  • Water savings and Water scarcity 
  • Heat decarbonisation and the public sector 
  • Precision energy management and energy savings 
  • The macroeconomic outlook
  • Membership benefits and data driven insights

Introduction

Our Managing Director, Adam Clarke, welcomed everyone in before welcoming our first session for the day.

Our Head of Trading, Duncan Wyatt, kicked off the day with an Energy Market Update where he explored rising energy prices and how geopolitical risks are creating short-term and future challenges as well as providing insights on immediate and long-term energy price risks.

Morning Breakout Sessions

 

Our first round of breakout sessions were led by Peter Darke and Scott Collins from EDF, Avery Chong from Lancaster University and Wave Utilities.

 

  • Pete is a Strategic Account Manager and Scott is a Service Development Manager, which they talked through the key changes and enhancements of the new framework focussing on how this will impact you as a member. As well as what member level data they have and how they are using this to support TEC and its members.
  • Avery is an Energy Manager and presented Lancaster University’s journey to heat decarbonisation, supported by the Green Heat Network Fund and Heat Network Efficiency Scheme.
  • Wave presented ‘The Importance of Saving Water’ and shared tips on improving water efficiency, such as spotting leaks early with their services.

Speakers

Professor Andrew Shepherd (left) from Northumbria University was the first out of our two keynote speakers and presented “Earth’s Ice from Space”. He showed us how  much the planets cryosphere has changed over the past 50 years and the impacts that come with that as well as how this shapes the future.

 

 

Our second keynote speaker Martin Roger-Fagg (right) is a Behavioural Economist, provided intriguing and entertaining insights into global macroeconomic trends. He delved into forecasts, UK demographics, why the housing market will boom again and issues & impacts unique to the UK.

Afternoon Breakout Sessions

Our second round of breakout sessions were led by Sam Moore from South West Net Zero Hub, Roger Martin-Fagg, and George Catto (kWIQly) & Gethin Lewis (Royal College of Music)

 

  • Sam, who is a Project Manager, looked at the heat challenges, current and upcoming initiatives, and emerging technologies – such as recoverable heat – with a discussion at the end session.
  • Roger held an open house Q&A where attendees held an open conversation about the current economy and its challenges.
  • George, a Client Services Director, and Gethin, Estates, Projects & Operations Manager gave an insightful talk about how sub-metering data can revolutionise energy insights across your estate as a pilot program with TEC Member, the Royal College of Music explores the wider potential of kWIQly’s AMR DNA.

 

Led by our Head of Carbon Reduction, John Brenton, a Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) Working Group meeting also took place.

Final Panel Session

Led by John Brenton, our final session was a panel session featuring Avery Chong, Tom Yearley from UPP Ltd and Noel McSweeney from the University of Greenwich.

The session started with a presentation from Noel McSweeney, Building Services Manager at the University of Greenwich who discussed the implementation of air source heat pumps and their Heat Decarbonisation Project.

This was followed by a panel discussion, which included contributions from Avery Chong and Tom Yearley, fostering engaging conversations around heat decarbonisation.
