Alarm bells ring due to heatwave in the Arctic
The Arctic has recently experienced a heatwave which has led scientists to worry about what could be in store for the rest of the world.
On Saturday 20th June 2020 the Russian Arctic town of Verkhoyansk experienced a record temperature of 38°C. A record which the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) is looking to verify. The last time this area of the world experienced similar temperatures was in July 1988 at 37.3° C.
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence, Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) published the following statement on Twitter;
“A severe heatwave is affecting the Arctic circle. Reports indicate air temperature reached 38° C in Verhojansk in Siberia and as shown by Sentinel3 the Land Surface Temperature (LST) reached 45°C.”
