TEC Support new SOS-UK sustainability campaign, we are pleased to share developments for their Student Switch Off programme. Launched in 2006 to reduce energy consumption in student residences, the programme has reached 1.6 million students over 18 years, significantly influencing behaviours and reducing energy and carbon footprints.
The programme, designed to address unnecessary energy use in student halls, offers a year-long schedule of digital activities, campus visits, and peer-led initiatives. Recognising that many students are living independently for the first time, Student Switch Off provides crucial guidance on energy efficiency.
Students taking part reported adopting more sustainable actions due to the programme, and planning to continue these practices in the future—an essential step in mitigating energy poverty as they move into rented accommodations.
This year, the programme is relaunching, reflecting the expanded focus beyond just energy efficiency to include waste and water management, fostering a comprehensive approach to sustainable living.
Over the years, the programme has identified many challenges that halls face in improving sustainable performance. TEC’s support of SOS-UK will help provide insights on energy performance issues in residences and support with data analysis.
