Analysis by PwC has found that the UK decarbonised at the fastest rate among G20 countries in 2016. The report, published on Tuesday 12 September, found that the carbon intensity of the UK economy fell by 7.7% in 2016, almost three times the global average of 2.6%, putting the UK top of PwC’s latest Low Carbon Economy Index (LCEI). The UK’s energy related emissions fell by 6%, largely driven by a rapid fall in coal consumption, improved energy efficiency and moderate economic growth. Jonathan Grant, Director of Climate Change at PwC, said: “Our initial LCEI analysis shows the UK hitting impressive decarbonisation rates compared with other major countries.”
