NIC – Net Zero: Opportunities for the power sector analysis recap

At the beginning of March the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) released their analysis ‘Net Zero: Opportunities for the power sector’.

The NIC supplies the government with impartial but expert advice on major infrastructure challenges.

This analysis focuses on the governments new, ambitious net zero target whilst highlighting the importance of the power sector within the transition. Whilst noting that emissions in the power sector have decreased by 53% in the last 10 years, they add that this level of success needs to continue.

Therefore, the recommendations set out in their report are achievable based on what can be predicted of  the UK in the next 30 years. As a result, the commission looks at renewable energy.

Furthermore, they believe a highly renewable system is the most effective way to reduce emissions, maintain low costs and increase flexibility.

If you would like to read the full analysis, it is available online at the National Infrastructure Commission’s website.
