New record for coal free electricity generation for Great Britain

In June last year a record was set for coal free electricity generation. This record was recently broken on 28th April 2020 which marked 438 hours and 10 minutes since the last coal generator came off the system.

This follows the already impressive achievements in the early stages of 2020. February marked the ‘greenest month on record’ for electricity generation along with April breaking records for renewable energy.

So, why has a new record of coal free electricity generation occurred?

The main culprit is the weather but recently, reduced demand has played a significant role too. The pandemic lockdown has seen the demand for electricity reduce greatly across the nation. Even though domestic usage is up, it doesn’t come close to the reduced demand from the industrial sector.
