Member Spotlight: Southampton Solent University achieves top ranking in carbon reduction for 2024/25

We are delighted to share that TEC Member Southampton Solent University, has climbed 25 places in the latest People & Planet University League, securing the top spot for carbon reduction among UK universities. The rankings assess institutions on sustainability factors such as waste, energy, and education.

Solent University’s  success highlights a year of progress in environmental sustainability, placing it in the top half of universities overall. The University’s Director of Estates and Facilities, Bryan Carroll, praised the achievement “improving our overall score and being ranked number one across all UK universities for carbon reduction is an excellent result for all the hard work and commitment of the teams to reduce Solent’s environmental impact. It demonstrates our commitment to environmental sustainability, and for Solent to be at the forefront of helping to fight climate change.”

People & Planet, the UK’s largest student-led environmental network, ranks universities annually on ethical and environmental performance. Solent previously signed the Fossil Free Declaration in 2020 after fully divesting from fossil fuels.

As the second-highest ranked university in its region and the top in Southampton, Solent continues to implement energy-efficient measures, such as optimizing campus operations and reducing water usage, solidifying its reputation as a leader in sustainability.
