Marking World Water Day 2025: supporting our members to reduce water consumption

On World Water Day we are shining a light on how our Water Framework is driving significant water and carbon savings. With supply expected to exceed demand by 2030, the need for water efficiency has never been greater.

Led by our Water Framework partner Wave, we help members to understand their water usage, driving down consumption, spend and carbon. Wave has helped many of our members to uncover and resolve water leakage issues and make water efficiencies. In 2023/2024 our members saved more than £847,000, from the Water Framework rate vs default wholesale charges.

Education is the second highest consumer of water by sector which is mainly due to the large estates institutions have. Moreover, higher education research is getting more technically demanding requiring more water resources to manage it. To compound this, water prices are set to increase from April 1, 2025, following PR24, a 5-year price review. Overall, Wholesale charges will increase by an average of 42% over the next 5 years.

Ollie Arthurs, TEC’s water specialist, said:

“Water scarcity combined with the water price increases are making it even more crucial to drive down consumption and spend. As institutions have largely domestic consumption there is a lot we can do to reduce water use.

Each member is saving on average 5% on their annual water and wastewater bill. To put that into context, our 90 framework members are saving over £1 million annually between them.”

The Water Framework covers water and wastewater services, flexible billing and tools and reporting. Additional services can also be accessed via the Framework. These range from installing automatic meter readers (AMRs) to monitor consumption to developing a water contingency plan. All members also have a dedicated account manager under the framework.
