Heat Network Zoning and Efficiency

How the Government’s Heat Network Zoning Policy will affect TEC Members was highlighted in a recent discussion, which also looked at the Government’s Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES).

The role of Net Zero Hubs in supporting institutions to navigate Heat Zoning policy, and to apply to the HNES outlined by the Greater South East Net Zero Hub (GSENZH) at a recent TEC webinar. The GSEHNZ outlined how universities can prepare for, and take advantage of zoning and HNES in their areas.

Heat networks currently provide almost 3% of UK heat demand – but the Government aims to increase that to 20% by 2050, creating an £80 billion market.

Some of our members have sites within heat network zones, and may face an expectation to connect in coming years.

The Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) is a £75 million government-funded programme designed to help operators of existing district heat and communal heating schemes improve efficiency, lower carbon emissions, and reduce costs.

HNES provides funding for optimisation studies, typically up to £24,000 with no match funding required. It also offers 50% capital grant funding to implement efficiency improvements identified in these studies. Round 10 of the Scheme is expected later in the year.
