The Climate Impacts of Digital Technology – What can Higher Education Institutions do?
Chris Preist is Professor of Sustainability and Computer Systems in the Department of Computer Science. His research focuses on the environmental impacts of digital technology and approaches to reduce them – from technical interventions to policy changes. He is also University Academic Director of Sustainability, and as part of that role he advises University of Bristol on digital sustainability strategy.
In this session Chris will focus on the carbon emissions associated with the deployment and use of digital technology in Higher Education, where the ‘hotspots’ to reduce are, and what approaches are effective and what are less so. He will share some of the results of a comprehensive study of University of Brisol’s digital environmental footprint, and the priorities for action they identified.
