TEC looks back on achievements to mark 30th anniversary celebrations

As we begin 2025, we have been reflecting on the organisation’s growth following TEC’s 30th anniversary.

We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings in 1994, set up as an offshoot of AUDE (Association of University Directors of Estates) by Birmingham and Warwick universities, with just six members. In 2003 we became an incorporated company and today we boast 178 members, offering a range of services across energy procurement, energy risk management, bureau services, data insight, water management and carbon and cost reduction.

Here are some of our highlights reflecting TEC’s growth over the last thirty years.

  • In 2019 TEC facilitated a UK first for the public sector when 20 TEC members joined forces in an aggregated Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), purchasing renewable energy directly from British wind farms.
  • In 2019 we launched The TEC Check, our no-cost Bill Validation Service. Our Bureau Services team conducts over 105 baseline checks on every bill, including reviews of non-commodity elements.
  • In 2020 we launched our Water, Wastewater, and Ancillary Services Framework in partnership with Wave. The framework now boasts 82 members.
  • In 2023/24, TEC members achieved £11.10 in savings for every £1 spent on fees for gas and electricity utilities.
  • Members made additional savings of £847,000 through the Water Framework rate vs Default Wholesale charges.

Adam Clarke, Managing Director at TEC, said: “Whilst we have grown considerably as an organisation over the last thirty years our remit remains the same – to deliver tangible benefits to our members through the provision of energy services. In the last year we have expanded these to include the all-important area of carbon reduction solutions as we continue to support our members net zero journeys. It is also clear that TEC has an important role to play in facilitating success and knowledge sharing across our membership and this will be a key focus in 2025.”
