The UK owns a quarter of the global offshore wind portfolio

The UK now owns a quarter of the global offshore wind market.

RenewableUK published their findings in a new report which states that the UK industry has retained the top spot with a complete capacity of 38.9GW.

Furthermore, global offshore wind projects which are under construction, consented, being planned or operational have grown by 30% within the last year. This growth has taken the projects to 159GW from 122GW.

Melanie Onn, Deputy Chief Executive for RenewableUK, commented:

“In the UK alone, we estimate next year’s auction for renewable power could secure over £20 billion of new investment.”

“In the current economic crisis, these new figures show that offshore wind is one of the major growth opportunities worldwide.”

This was shown with China moving up to second place with an increase of 60%, the US keeping third place with a 13% increase and Taiwan with a 28% increase at fifth place.
